ESPS METEORO SUPPORTS TANZANIAN NAVY TRAINING IN DAR ES SALAAM

During a recent port visit to Dar es Salaam, EU NAVFOR’s Spanish warship ESPS Meteoro invited the Tanzanian Navy on board to receive training in maritime skills.

Personnel of the Tanzanian Navy visited ESPS Meteoro on the morning of 2 May 2018 as part of a Local Maritime Capacity Building (LMCB) activity. Meteoro’s crew provided training in damage control to improve the skills of the Tanzanians in dealing with fires and floods on board a ship at sea. This involved the use of thermal cameras, explosive gas detectors and individual firefighting equipment.

Following this, Meteoro’s medical team delivered a lesson about cardiopulmonar resuscitation (CPR), and the Tanzanians also received a briefing about the steps to take upon receiving a distress call. The mariners were presented with a certificate to show that they had completed the training.

This training follows up on the visit by EU NAVFOR Spanish warship ESPS Patiño to Dar es Salaam on 3 April, where she played host to members of the Tanzanian Navy and provided training in Visit Boarding Search and Seizure (VBSS) and basic first aid procedures.

Activities such as this support the development of state maritime security capabilities and are a vital part of EU NAVFOR’s Operation Atalanta in combatting piracy and other maritime-related crime in the Western Indian Ocean region.
