During a recent port visit of the EU Naval Force flagship, FS Siroco, to The Seychelles, the Force Commander, Rear Admiral Hervé Bléjean visited the Palais de Justice and Montagne Posée Prison.
During his visit to the Palais de Justice, where he met the Chief of Justice and the President of the Court of Appeal, the Force Commander stated “I am very pleased to see how, after apprehending suspect pirates at sea, the EU Naval Force can work with the Seychellois authorities to help provide a fair and rigorous prosecution process. Admiral Bléjean also commented “This regional legal support from The Seychelles is a key tool in order to set up the conditions for a safe and secure maritime environment. The legal finish is a crucial aspect of Operation Atalanta objectives.”
The Force Commander also visited the Montagne Posée Prison to get an overview of the capabilities of the impressive detention facility, where around 40 convicted Somali Pirates are currently being detained.
After visiting the prison and speaking to some of the inmates who were engaged in wood and leather work training, Rear Admiral Bléjean expressed his admiration for the work of the prison to Raymond Saint-Ange:
“The motivation and commitment you and your team show here, not just for the detainees’ security but also for their welfare, is just outstanding. I wish you well in continuing to provide, with international community assistance, rehabilitation to convicted pirates to prevent them from returning to their illegal activities.”
