The Force Headquarters (FHQ) on board “Reina Sofia” Frigate has confirmed the incident and the safety of the ship.
Rota, December 05th, 2020—EU NAVFOR Somalia received a phone call from a passingby vessel reporting a distress call from a vessel under attack by two small craft north of IRTC while sailing to Salalah, Oman.
As part of internal incident response procedure, the alert corresponding to the event was posted in MSCHOA website and Force Commander on board his flagship ESPS “REINA SOFIA” tasked a maritime patrol aircraft under his command, which finally located the targeted vessel and confirmed the attack. Vessel is safe and resumed course to her destination.
Currently, vessel is being monitored by EU NAVFOR Somalia.
The authorship is still unknown and the incident is still under investigation.
In close cooperation with relevant international and regional agencies and the shipping industry global associations, EU NAVFOR Somalia is fully committed to the safety and security of seafarers.
We strongly encourages all vessels transiting the MSCHOA Voluntary Registration Area to register with MSCHOA in accordance with BMP5.
