EU NAVFOR Op. ATALANTA and the Indian Navy have held a long-time honored spirit of cooperation to assure freedom of navigation in the Horn of Africa and to keep piracy suppressed in the region.
Last 18th and 19th of June 21, EU NAVFOR Task Force 465 and Indian Navy Ship Trikand and carried out an exercise at sea including helicopter cross-deck operations, tactical manoeuvres, boarding operations, underway replenishment and other maritime security operations.
In this context, EU NAVFOR Maritime Operations Center and Indian Navy IFC-IOR Gurugram executed a virtual information sharing exercise that proved the fluent communications between the two centers, which has been a priceless opportunity to test the information sharing network, key for any maritime security architecture.
IORIS, the Indian Ocean Region Information Sharing platform developed by CRIMARIO, was used to exchange information amongst the two international centers, as well as the Atalanta and Indian naval units at sea. This tool served as an essential and unique platform to assure real-time, secure communications and data and information sharing amongst all involved in the exercise.
The platform continues to represent a high value tool offering excellent support to the multinational cooperative environment, especially for the coordination of operations and exercises, as tested and tried in the Western Indian Ocean.
EU NAVFOR Somalia Operation ATALANTA will continue to support and promote IORIS as the only common tool that can fill the communications gap among all actors in the Indo-Pacific, whether at sea or ashore, making a fundamental contribution to the development of a maritime security architecture.
