8th February 2020, Merchant Vessel (MV) NORTHERN JADE sailing under the flag of Germany, called EU NAVFOR Somalia OHQ requesting medical assistance for a crew member who was injured. Watchkeeping team reacted immediately and passed the request to Force Commander Commodore Vizinha Mirones, who tasked ESPS “VICTORIA”, as the closest unit under his command.
The Spanish frigate Victoria proceeded to intercept MV NORTHERN JADE at high speed, and launched a medical team when in range of the container ship. Once on board the Merchant vessel, the medical team provided first aid to the crew member who was around 30 years old. He had fallen from a stairway 4 meters high and was severely injured in one shoulder and one foot.
MV “NORTHERN JADE” was registered with EU NAVFOR Somalia voluntary reporting scheme (MSCHOA), in accordance with BMP5, and she was monitored by our forces during her transit through the voluntary reporting area.
The implementation of BMP measures is essential for our seafarers’ safety and security.
