ITS Federico Martinengo, the Italian Frigate, which is currently part of the EU’s counter-piracy Operation Atalanta, has rendezvoused with the WFP (World Food Programme) vessel Petra II off the coast of Somalia.
EU Naval Forces (EU NAVFOR) are mandated to protect vulnerable vessels, like the Petra II, currently contracted to the WFP to deliver vital food aid to the people of Somalia. In this case, the deployed Croatian military forces embarked on Petra II and ITS Martinengo combined at sea to ensure the safe delivery of this vital aid.
Almost 1.8 million tonnes of food aid have reached the Somali people through the direct protection from European Union Naval forces over the last 10 years. This is due to continue for at least another two years after the Operation Atalanta mandate was extended to December 2020.
