Two days after taking over as Force Commander of the EU NAVFOR, Task Force 465, Rear Admiral Jugel, German Navy, met with Rear Admiral Mattesi, Italian Navy, Commander Task Force 508 (Standing NATO Maritime Group 1), on board of the ITS Andrea Doria.
After a briefing of the operational skills and abilities on board the Italian frigate, the two CTFs reinforced the continuing dialog between the coalitions with both Admirals emphasising their aim was not only for “de-confliction” but also “synchronisation” of their counter-piracy operations and the escorting of vulnerable shipping in the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin.
EUNAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Program (WFP) and vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). EUNAVFOR also protects vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, deters and disrupts piracy. EUNAVFOR finally monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
