EU NAVFOR Operation Commander statement

Dec 02, 2018 - 13:14
EU NAVFOR was greatly saddened to learn the tragic news of the death of Vice Admiral Scott Stearney United States Navy, Commander US Fifth Fleet and the Combined Maritime Forces. We send our deepest condolences to his family and his team in Bahrain. We will hold his memory dear and reflect on his strong and dynamic leadership of Naval Operations alongside Operation Atalanta.

The best way to honour him is for EU NAVFOR and Combined Maritime Forces to continue our collective maritime security operations in the Western Indian Ocean and Horn of Africa, where we have been deterring, repressing and preventing piracy together since 2008. Vice Admiral Scott Stearney has led by example and acted as a catalyst in our vital partnership during combined and joint operational tasks.

Vice Admiral Stearney, Rest in Peace, Sir.

Major General Charlie Stickland
Op Commander ATALANTA
