The EU NAVFOR Spanish warship CANARIAS and EU NAVFOR Maritime Patrol Aircraft currently patrol the area where French and Spanish tuna fishing fleets operate in accordance with EU NAVFOR Operation Atalanta’s aim to show presence in the entire area of operations.
One of EU NAVFOR’s mandates is to protect vulnerable shipping and fishing vessels are in that category and, to date, 4 EU NAVFOR warships have provided support to vulnerable vessels in that area.
There have been reports of pirate attacks by some fishermen but these have turned out to be spurious reports. EU NAVFOR has responded to such reports that have been shown to be radar contacts.
