EU NAVFOR’s Spanish Warship, ESPS Patiño, has supported the EU NAVFOR Italian Flagship, ITS Carlo Margottini, in its counter-piracy mission with a Replenishment At Sea (RAS).
ESPS Patiño supplied ITS Carlo Margottini with vital fuel, oils and water whilst underway, enabling both vessels to continue their counter-piracy patrolling duties around the Horn of Africa during the operation. Patiño’s SH-60B helicopter and the Op Atalanta P-3M Orion aircraft were conducting reconnaissance missions at the same time.
The Op Atalanta Force Commander, Rear Admiral Simone Malvagna (ITN), took the opportunity to visit the Patiño and he was welcomed on board by her Commanding Officer Ricardo Fernandez Lopez. A Spanish delegation was also invited aboard the Margottini.
EU NAVFOR has been conducting counter-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia since December 2008. Advanced cooperation between units of EU NAVFOR and other maritime security organisations, such as Combined Maritime Forces, helps to keep international maritime trade flowing through these important sea lanes.
