EU NAVFOR’s operational capabilities have been reinforced on 13 September with the arrival of FGS KÖLN in the operational area.
FGS KÖLN is a frigate that has been in service with the German Navy since 1984. She has a displacement of 3,700 tons and a crew of 227.
FGS KÖLN is equipped with two helicopters and has additional personnel on board, such as specialists in force protection and boarding teams.
EU NAVFOR Somalia - Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid for the World Food Program (WFP) and vessels of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). EU NAVFOR also protects vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, deters and disrupts piracy. EU NAVFOR finally monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
