EU NAVFOR’s logistic capacity has been reinforced with the arrival of FGS RHÖN in the area of operations.
FGS RHÖN is a Type 704 replenishment tanker that has been in the service of the German Navy since 1977, and that has a displacement of 14,169 tonnes and a crew of 42.
The tanker FGS RHÖN will enable EU NAVFOR warships to remain much longer on operations at sea.
EU NAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Program (WFP) and vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). EU NAVFOR furthermore protects vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, deters and disrupts piracy. EU NAVFOR also monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
