For the third time this year, Republic of Korea and EU NAVFOR warships have come together to continue their cooperation in the fight against piracy.
During their deployment, the crew from the ROKS Dae Jo Young and from the EU NAVFOR flagship ITS Fasan carried out medical evacuation and sea boat exercises in order to build on their ever growing relationship off the coast of Somalia to deter piracy and protect vulnerable shipping. The training included briefings and exercises on search and rescue, helicopter operations and boarding a vessel that is suspected of being involved in piracy.
The Force Commander of EU NAVFOR, Rear Admiral Fabio Gregori said of the interaction “it is great to see the development of EU NAVFOR and the ROK Navy relationship. This integration of the ROKS Dae Jo Young into my force was an important moment for the sharing of information and the exchange of operational procedures. The joint exercise at sea helped tremendously to strengthen the interoperability between the European forces of Operation Atalanta and the naval forces of the Republic of Korea.” The Republic of Korea is constantly operating in the Gulf of Aden and in the Arabian Sea to contribute to ensuring the freedom of navigation and the maritime safety of merchant traffic in this fundamental area of the world.
Maritime training with other regional partners, such as the Republic of Korea Navy, is an extremely important aspect of Operation Atalanta’s work to deter piracy off the coast of Somalia. The aim is to strengthen cooperation with maritime forces to help seafarers stay safe during their transits across the Indian Ocean.
