The Spanish frigate VICTORIA finished as an EU NAVFOR warship in the same way as she started; by detecting, apprehending and boarding pirate vessels. She has conducted a variety of tasks in the force and has found herself at the centre of the action on more than a few occasions.
During her 99 days at sea she has spent a good deal of her time conducting the main task of EU NAVFOR – escorting World Food Programmes and AMISOM’s transports as well as protecting the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor, safeguarding one of the world’s busiest sea routes. SPS VICTORIA has spent the majority of her time patrolling the Somali Basin, the waters between the Somali coast and the Seychelles.
In his farewell signal to the Spanish frigate the EU NAVFOR Force Commander Jan Thörnqvist stated: “My hearty thanks and congratulations to SPS VICTORIA for a well carried out mission as part of EU NAVFOR – BZ.”
EU NAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Programme (WFP) and vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia, AMISOM and to protect vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean and to deter and disrupt piracy. EU NAVFOR also monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
